It is the only archipelago in the world certified as a Sustainable Tourist Destination
The Azores obtained the third level of silver in international certification as a Sustainable Tourist Destination by the EarthCheck standard, in accordance with the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
This classification proves the positive and consolidated evolution of work started in 2017, while reinforcing the positioning and leadership of the Azores in terms of tourism sustainability. The Azores archipelago continues to be the only one in the world certified as a Sustainable Tourist Destination.
Independent auditors from EarthCheck (certifying entity) evaluated, between the 10th and 15th of October this year, several infrastructures on different islands in the Azores, resulting in yet another level reached in the certification process. The regulations adopted by EarthCheck stipulate an evolutionary certification process that requires the progressive achievement of four levels (silver, gold, platinum and master). The Region's next major objective is to reach gold status in 2024.
